Here is the fifth column in the weekly Tuesday feature “WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP: How to Use Social Media to Get Your Dream Job” by Yael K. Miller and Phyllis Zimbler Miller, co-founders of the social media marketing company Miller Mosaic Power Marketing.
Yael and Phyllis are writing about the FICTIONAL CHARACTER Amy H., who will be a senior this fall at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in English. Find all the posts in this series, organized for your convenience, here.
__________
Amy H. has decided she wants to commit to writing her own blog. Now she reads Chapter 5 – “Things to Know About Having Your Own Blog” in the ebook “WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP: How to Use Social Media to Get Your Dream Job.”
As she still isn’t committed to a specific career, she doesn’t get a domain name (URL) such as www.MillerMosaicPowerMarketing.com
Instead, based on the ebook’s suggestion, she gets a domain name of her own name. This way, if she eventually goes in a different direction, she has established her online presence with her name and not an interest in a specific career.
“It is preferable,” the ebook says, “to get a .com domain name because people often automatically type.com when entering a URL and you don’t want to send people to someone else’s site or blog.”
Amy goes to Register.com to purchase the URL of her full name (first and last) followed by .com
She will also need to pay for a web hosting company on which the files of her website/blog “live.”
Now she needs a website built on that domain name. The ebook recommends WordPress from WordPress.org (NOT WordPress.com) as the software enables a non-techie to completely control the content.
Now Amy has to decide whether she will set up the WordPress site herself or have a knowledgeable web person create the site.
Besides other things that a knowledgeable web person can do that Amy might not be able to do, the web person can ensure that the WordPress site includes basic search engine optimization (SEO – stuff that makes the site attractive to search engines).
Amy decides that she will invest in her future and, therefore, will get a self-hosted WordPress site built for her by a knowledgeable web person.
Now she has to find a reputable web person to build her WordPress site. The ebook recommends the ebook’s authors’ business associate Doron Orenstein at http://budurl.com/ultrapro
Her homework assignment for the coming week is to accomplish these steps.
Phyllis and Yael hope you’ll sign up for new post notifications here at ebranding.me through the RSS feed or email. Then do Amy’s assignments for yourself so you’re ready for next week.
