The eBranding Me team recently began a new series: PBYP – Pause Before You Post. Every Monday morning a post will feature 5 “Social Media Over-Shares”. We have all made the mistake of pressing Post too soon and publishing content that was inappropriate or not complete. While these mistakes happen, a simple mouse-click can make a remarkable dent in one’s personal brand.
You can find all of the posts, organized for your convenience, here. Subscribe via email and/or RSS.
An eBranding Me supporter, Opeyemi Thomas, shared an interesting article for this weeks “PBYP – Pause Before You Post” column. The editorial, titled “Web Photos That Reveal Secrets, Like Where You Live,” was published on Yahoo News on Thursday, August 12th and discussed privacy concerns in relation to geotagged images.
“Security experts and privacy advocates have recently begun warning about the potential dangers of geotags, which are embedded in photos and videos taken with GPS-equipped smartphones and digital cameras. Because the location data is not visible to the casual viewer, the concern is that many people may not realize it is there; and they could be compromising their privacy, if not their safety, when they post geotagged media online.”
Smartphone users routinely capture images on their device and upload them to various social media websites (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc – even through email). To their surprise, these images reveal much more than meets the eye. Websites such as Please Rob Me and I Can Stalk U hope to increase awareness of the dangers involved when participating in social media online.
Simple tools, available to the masses, allow for everyday people to find out where and when a picture was taken. Below is a screen shot of the resulting “EXIF” GPS Data the eBranding Me team found on an image during research.
So remember, Pause Before You Post! Enjoy this weeks “Social Media Over-Shares” below.
