PBYP – Pause Before You Post (11)

Posted September 13th, 2010 in PBYP, Series by adminPrint This Post Print This Post

The eBranding Me team is proud to publish an original series: PBYP – Pause Before You Post. Every Monday morning a post features 5 “Social Media Over-Shares”. We have all made the mistake of pressing Post too soon and publishing content that was inappropriate or not complete. While these mistakes happen, a simple mouse-click can make a remarkable dent in one’s personal brand.

You can find all of the posts, organized for your convenience, here. Subscribe via email and/or RSS.

Similar to individuals, organizations must also manage their reputations. For years, companies have hired experts in marketing, networking and new technology to help maintain their brand identity. Community Managers, as they are commonly referred to, help the firm sustain a constant voice over all media channels, as well as, a clear and concise message.

Unfortunately, a coffee shop in Daly City, California – Onyx Café – didn’t pause before posting a promotional tweet late last week. The following tweet was a reply to Onyx’s original update:

Onyx Café was under the impression that a local fire was a result of the dry season, typically experienced in this area of California. However, this particular occurrence was a result of an explosion where lives were lost and others seriously injured. Regardless of the events that led to a forest fire, the Onyx Café should not have been attempting to monetize the tragedy. Like other local businesses, the coffee shop should have offered shelter for the families displaced by the devastating flames.

Since the event, Onyx Café has recanted their promotional tweet and apologized for their distasteful comments. They state, “We did not fully understand the situation until after the comment was made.” They are now offering to match all of their patrons’ donations to the American Red Cross for the San Bruno Fire Relief efforts.

See this week’s five “Social Media Over-Shares”. Enjoy!
